Reflection on Journey & Challenges

Reflecting on my journey, I’ve come to realize that my career has been shaped as much by the unexpected challenges as by the milestones. Coming from a financial background, I never imagined I’d be leading digital transformation initiatives in the energy sector. But with each challenge, whether adapting to new technologies or guiding teams through times of uncertainty, I learned the value of embracing change rather than resisting it.

One of my early challenges was moving from a purely financial role into a leadership position where I had to navigate a fast-paced, constantly evolving industry. The energy sector, especially in its shift toward digital innovation, required me to expand my skill set beyond numbers. Rather than shy away from unfamiliar territory, I saw it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

A pivotal moment in my career was when I took on a senior leadership role and became part of shaping not just company decisions, but industry-wide change. The challenge of leading through uncertainty was tough, but it taught me that leadership is not about knowing all the answers—it’s about trusting the process, building a strong team, and empowering others.

Looking back, I see how resilience and adaptability have been key to my journey. For women entering this field, I advise embracing challenges and trusting in your ability to learn. The energy sector rewards fresh ideas and innovation, and your perspective is needed to help shape its future.

Advice to Young Women

To young women entering the energy sector, my advice is to develop a mindset of continuous learning. The energy industry is evolving rapidly, and you need to be adaptable and open to new ideas. Stay curious, especially about digital advancements, as the sector is increasingly driven by technology.

Don’t just focus on technical expertise—also work on developing your leadership skills. Whether you’re managing teams or spearheading projects, the ability to inspire and lead through uncertainty is crucial. The energy sector is in a state of constant transformation, and leadership is about guiding others through change. Don’t wait for opportunities—create them by proactively seeking new challenges.

The journey is not always a straight line, but remember, every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Stay focused, stay curious, and remember that the road to success is built on continuous learning and resilience.

Her work spans diverse roles in eCommerce, IT finance, internal controls, and broader finance functions, giving her a comprehensive understanding of the digital supply chain. Reflection on Journey & Challenges

My journey into the energy sector has been a learning experience at every stage. When I first entered the industry, I didn’t foresee the impact technology would have on transforming traditional processes. The energy sector, especially in eCommerce and digital invoicing, has been a fascinating field to work in, but it hasn’t come without its challenges.

One of the biggest hurdles I encountered was leading the transition to remote work in the energy sector. We were accustomed to in-person collaboration, and suddenly, we had to figure out how to maintain productivity and efficiency in a fully remote environment. It was a time of adjustment, and the key to overcoming it was creating clear, structured workflows and communication channels. Through teamwork, we not only navigated these changes but came out stronger.

Another significant challenge was overseeing the global implementation of SAP S/4HANA, a complex and transformative project. Ensuring the successful deployment of this system, while meeting various regional requirements, pushed me to expand my skills in ways I hadn’t imagined. But through it, I learned how vital digital solutions are in driving business transformation.

For young women entering the energy sector, I encourage you to embrace challenges as opportunities to learn. The industry is changing, and there is no better time to be a part of that transformation. Take on projects that stretch your capabilities and don’t be afraid to make mistakes along the way. These moments will shape your expertise and your leadership.

Advice to Young Women

To young women looking to enter the energy industry, my first piece of advice is to embrace both your technical and leadership potential. The energy sector, especially in areas like digital transformation and eCommerce, is evolving rapidly, and there’s a growing need for women who are not just problem-solvers, but innovators. Whether you’re interested in IT, finance, operations, or any other field, the industry needs diverse perspectives to drive change.

My advice is to build a strong foundation of technical skills. Whether it’s understanding complex systems like SAP S/4HANA or diving into areas like electronic invoicing or data analytics, being comfortable with technology will set you apart. It’s not just about learning the tools but about understanding how they can transform businesses and make a tangible impact on global operations. The more you learn, the more you’ll realize how interconnected everything is—from finance to compliance, to customer service—and how critical technology is in shaping these connections.

But technical skills alone aren’t enough. Develop your leadership mindset. Be proactive, stay curious, and take ownership of the projects you’re passionate about. Don’t wait for someone to hand you the opportunity—create it. Leadership is often about guiding others through uncertainty, and with the digital transformations we’re experiencing in the energy sector, there’s never been a better time to lead through change. Show up with confidence, take risks, and always be ready to learn from your experiences, both successes and challenges.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that resilience is key. There will be moments of doubt, especially in an industry that’s traditionally been male dominated, but remember that your voice matters, and your perspective is unique. Embrace the challenges, because they are opportunities for growth. And remember, the path to success is rarely linear—sometimes it’s about finding your own way and trusting your ability to navigate through the unknown.

Lastly, seek out mentors, not just within your company or industry, but from diverse backgrounds. You’d be surprised how much you can learn from those who have walked different paths, and they’ll offer invaluable guidance as you carve out your own.

The energy sector is full of opportunities—both for innovation and for personal growth. If you are passionate, persistent, and open to learning, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.

Brittani Collins, Co-Founder & Operations at Industrial Data Labs

With over 15 years in the valve manufacturing sector, I’ve had the opportunity to lead global valve product line developments, run high-performing sales teams, and now, as co-founder of Industrial Data Labs (IDL), directly impact digital transformation in the PVF industry. IDL, an Artificial Intelligence start-up, harnesses AI to revolutionize how inside sales teams process RFQs—freeing up time for customer engagement and revenue growth rather than spending countless hours on manual data entry.

My passion has always been at the intersection of business operations, profitability, and technology. A defining moment in my career was leading the corporate relocation of an API 6D valve manufacturing facility—a project that involved implementing a lean manufacturing workflow and a fully scannable WMS inventory system, resulting in world-class inventory accuracy. It was a complex challenge that pushed me beyond my comfort zone, but it reinforced my belief that resilience and innovation drive progress.

My industry leadership extends through active participation on the marketing and membership committees for the PVF Roundtable and PIDX International. These organizations are pivotal in shaping the future of the PVF industry and digital supply chains, and I’m passionate about advocating for more efficient, technology-driven processes.

Reflection on Journey & Challenges

My journey in the energy sector is deeply personal, inspired by my mother who was among the first four women in outside sales in Houston’s PVF industry in 1974. I grew up witnessing the immense pressures she faced in this male-dominated industry, particularly the endless late nights and weekends spent processing quotations. This experience gave me unique insight into the industry’s critical need for technological innovation.

One of my most defining experiences was leading a major manufacturing facility relocation project. Despite encountering numerous technical and logistical challenges, I remained resilient, constantly researching solutions and leveraging my network of mentors for guidance. This experience taught me an invaluable lesson: true innovation often requires stepping beyond your comfort zone and viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth.

Now, with Industrial Data Labs, I have the incredibly fulfilling opportunity to address the very challenges I witnessed throughout my career and my mother’s journey, using cutting-edge technology to transform industry practices and enhance quality of life for professionals in the field. This work reinforces my belief that there’s always room for innovation to improve efficiencies – we just need to be bold enough to challenge the status quo.

Advice to Young Women

For women looking to build a career in the energy sector, my advice is simple: be bold, be curious, and build your network.

  1. Challenge the status quo. Always ask yourself, What problem can I solve? The industry needs innovative thinkers, and fresh perspectives drive real change.
  2. Build your network strategically. Seek out mentors, peers, and communities that support your growth. Professional groups, especially women-focused organizations in tech and energy, can be powerful career accelerators.
  3. Be a knowledge seeker. Stay open to learning new skills, whether technical, operational, or leadership based. The ability to adapt and bridge gaps between teams will make you indispensable.
  4. Use your voice. The energy sector thrives on diverse perspectives, but only if they’re heard. Speak up in meetings, volunteer for projects that excite you, and don’t be afraid to take the lead.

One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is that confidence isn’t something you have—it’s something you build. Taking risks, embracing challenges, and navigating uncertainty will make you stronger. The future of the energy sector depends on diverse, innovative leaders. Step into the space. You belong here.

Reflection on Journey & Challenges

Looking back on my journey from being a software engineer to founding and growing a business, I am struck by how much I have learned and grown – not just professionally, but personally as well. What began as a passion for solving technical problems evolved into a much broader mission: building a company that could deliver value to customers, empower employees, and thrive in a competitive global market. Along the way, I faced numerous challenges that tested my resilience, adaptability and leadership skills. Here are some key reflections on this transformation journey:

  1. Transitioning from Engineer to Entrepreneur: as a software engineer, my focus was on solving technical problems and delivering projects on time. When I started the business, I quickly realized that I had to wear multiple hats – salesperson, secretary, product developer, strategist and a leader – often all in the same day. Without an MBA, I had to learn every aspect of running a business. I learned to embrace uncertainty and make decisions with incomplete details, a skill that has been critical to navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship.
  2. Building and leading a diversified team: One of the most rewarding aspects of building a business has been assembling and leading a diversified team. Early on, I realized that success depended not just on hiring talents, but also on fostering a culture of trust, collaboration and innovation. Leading a team with different backgrounds, skill sets and perspectives taught me the importance of empathy, active listening, clear communication and effective delegation.
  3. Scaling internationally: expanding operations internationally was a significant milestone – and one of the most challenging. I had to understand different regulatory environments, cultural norms, local markets while maintaining a cohesive global strategy. Building relationships with international partners and customers reinforced the importance of having a clear value proposition that resonates across borders.
  4. Building Long term strategic partnership: Assisting customers to transform their supply chain terminal mission critical infrastructures goes beyond just meeting immediate needs. Our business success relies on delivering sustainable value to our customers with reliability, trust and consistency. We act as an operational partner to our customers, seamlessly integrating into their operations rather than just providing systems.
  5. Overcoming challenges and embracing growth: The journey has not been without its setback. There were times when I doubted my decisions, faced financial pressures, or struggled to balance competing priorities. Each challenge, however, taught me valuable lessons. I learned to stay focused on the bigger picture, to seek feedback and mentorship, and to view failures as opportunities of growth.
  6. The Importance of Vision and Adaptability: A vision provides a direction and purpose, but the path to achieving it is rarely linear. Being open to change has been essential to staying competitive. Balancing long term goals with short term agility has been a delicate but necessary art.

Advice to Young Women

  1. Develop Self-confidence with Own Expertise: Energy industry needs many specialists. It is important to identify your own expertise and develop your competence which helps you to build confidence.
  2. Build a Support Network: seek mentors and sponsors who can provide valuable guidance and open doors to you.
  3. Leadership with Emotional Strength: females are sensitive, intuitive and emotional. We need to have strong emotional inner self to develop effective leadership. Lead in a way that touches the hearts with empathy, caring and authenticity. No need to mimic male leadership style.
  4. Work-life balance: The energy sector can demand long hours, especially in field roles or project- based work. Most women are multi-tasking when they become mothers. It is important to communicate your needs and seek the flexibility at work which allows you grow professionally without “burnouts”.
  5. Stay passionate and embrace global opportunities: passion leads to true impact towards outcome. The energy sector is critical to solving emissions, climate change, economic growth and energy poverty. Let the passion drive you with a good purpose in life. The industry is global. There are many more opportunities in different corners of the world that will attract you and need your valuable contribution. The potentials are limitless for women in energy industry with more profound impact in the days to come.

Reflection on Journey & Challenges

My journey into digital supply chain and automation has been shaped by my passion for technology and curiosity about its impact on business operations. Coming from an IT background, I see my role as a bridge between technology and business, making complex processes seamless for companies worldwide while embracing change as an opportunity for growth.

One of my biggest challenges has been stepping into an industry that is still evolving in its digital transformation. Many companies continue to rely on outdated, manual processes, and driving change requires persistence. Rather than seeing resistance as a roadblock, I view it as an opportunity to educate and inspire.

Balancing different roles—leading strategy and teams, engaging with clients, and continuously learning new technologies—has also been a challenge, but staying adaptable has been key. Success isn’t about having all the answers, but about being open to solutions and recognizing that change is a continuous process.

I am deeply inspired by the amazing men and women around me, from friends, mentors, and colleagues to family members like my mother, who has always been a role model of strength, determination, and resilience. Watching her balance multiple responsibilities while staying determined and enthusiastic has shaped my own approach to challenges and success. I firmly believe that success is driven by mindset and determination, and that energy, resilience, and passion are invaluable in any career.

Advice to Young Women

Life is full of ups and downs—no one’s journey is perfect. Challenges, failures, and setbacks are part of the process, and they shape us into stronger, wiser individuals. Instead of fearing obstacles, see them as opportunities to grow, adapt, and become more resilient.

As a young woman navigating both career growth and personal fulfillment, these are the principles I follow in my own life and would love to share with others.

  1. Stay endlessly curious—always explore new ideas, technologies, and ways to improve processes.
  2. Invest in yourself—grow both personally and professionally and develop skills that make you a strong leader and problem solver.
  3. Speak up and stand by your ideas—your voice and perspective matter and bringing diverse viewpoints to the table drives real change.
  4. Be authentic and own your strengths—your multitasking mind, creativity, and emotional intelligence are advantages, not limitations.
  5. Choose your circle wisely—surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you.
  6. Compare only with yourself—your biggest benchmark is who you were yesterday, so focus on your own growth and be your own north star, guiding yourself toward your goals with confidence and determination.
  7. Turn challenges into opportunities—I have a poster in my home office with a quote that always inspires me from Marcus Aurelius’ book Meditations: Obstacles are opportunities. ‘The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.’ While it may seem simple, I see it as a fundamental principle and a life-guiding truth.
  8. Have confidence and trust yourself—your intuition, skills, and determination will take you far.

The need for strong, diverse leaders has never been greater. Your insights, ideas, and drive can shape the future—so be bold, take up space, and never stop pushing forward.
